Contrary to popular belief, Jim Jones was a Communist on a mission. I don't know if he was pretending to be a pastor or if he was falsely presented as a "pastor" in the movie to increase it's "entertainment" value. Jones had the mass suicide planned before he ever left for Guyana. Here is a video testimony of a friend who had questioned him before he left on why he thought the mass suicide would be necessary:
